FAQ

What is the proper way to burn my soy candle?
There are a few things you should know to fully enjoy your Luminology artisan soy candle. Visit our candle care section for instructions and tips.

How long do Luminology soy candles burn?
Our 6-ounce candles burn approximately 24 hours. 2-ounce votives burn up to 12 hours.

I am having trouble lighting the wooden wick.
No worries! There is a simple and effective trick to solve this problem.* First attempt to light the wick using a click-lighter (they work best), allowing a little pool of wax to melt at the base of the wick. Remove the lighter from the wick and allow to cool off for a minute or so. Take a small wad of tissue, paper towel or napkin… and dab it over the wick and the small pool of melted wax. Discard tissue. Try lighting the wick again. Voila!

*All of our candles are made by hand so it’s possible that we trimmed the wick a little too much or maybe wax splashed up onto the wick as we poured, causing the wick to not want to light right away.

The wick will light but won’t stay lit very long.
If your wick has been burning for a while but seems to want to die out, try the following trick. When you notice that the flame is diminishing, blow it out and let cool for five to ten minutes. When wick is cool enough to touch, carefully pinch off the burnt portion of the wick being careful not to get your fingers or wick trimmings in the melty wax. Remove any trimmings that fall into wax with a spoon or other heat safe kitchen utensil (bamboo skewers work well). Try lighting the wick again with a click-lighter (they work best). The flame should be nice and healthy now.

Are Luminology soy candles refillable?
Yes. We offer a local refill service for those in the Quad City IA/IL area. Your 6-ounce candles and 2-ounce votives are both refillable. There are 3 convenient locations for you to drop off and pick up your refill order. You can refill your candle with any of our fragrances or an unscented option, and limited edition fragrances as available. What a perfect way to enjoy your favorite Luminology candle all over again!

Are the porcelain vessels reusable once my candle is done burning?
Yes. We purposefully chose to create vessels that also can be used as serving pieces for food. The porcelain is of the highest quality. The interior glaze is certified food-safe, lead free and non-toxic. Once your candle has completely burned, remove and discard the wick tab and wash out any wax reside with warm soapy water. The heirloom porcelain is designed for reuse throughout your home, gracing your home for a lifetime.

How do I properly care for my porcelain vessel?
Visit our porcelain care section for information on cleaning and caring for your porcelain.

Can I put my empty porcelain vessel in the oven, microwave, or dishwasher?
Yes. Once your candle has burned and you’ve removed the wick tab and any wax residue, the empty porcelain vessles are safe to use in the oven, microwave and dishwasher. Please take extra care when removing from the oven or microwave as the porcelain retains heat and can get quite hot when exposed to high temperatures. The porcelain can be cleaned in the dishwasher as long as prolonged soaking is avoided. However, because the exterior of the vessles are unglazed, we recommend hand-washing to prolong the life of the work. It is not recommended to put your porcelain on a hot plate as the bottom can discolor.

Can I order a different glaze color for the fragrance I’m interested in (or vice versa)?
Yes. We do custom orders so you can create your own combinations. Contact us to place a custom order. Please allow a little extra time for production.

What does phthalate-free (tha-late) mean and why is it important that Luminology soy candles do not contain phthalates?
Phthalates are a class of chemicals that has been linked to hormone disruption, which can affect development and fertility (source: “Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, www.nottoopretty.org). Simply put, we believe it’s wise to not include chemicals in our candles that may be harmful when inhaled. Read more about phthalates.
